Break 'em Habits - With Help
'Fix your thoughts on Jesus.' Hebrews 3:1 NIV
From snacking on too much sugar, to an addiction that controls our behaviour, habits affect us all. And, if we're really honest, many of us are likely to be dealing with a habit right now. Habits haunt us, and sometimes they merge so closely into our lifestyle that it takes a while to acknowledge something needs to change (ever blocked out what you know God is telling you to stop?).
So, something needs to change. The Bible says, 'let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think' (Romans 12:2 NLT). Which sounds great, until it refers to something that controls us and/or we don't really want to let it go, right? Let's break it down. God wants to transform the way we process stuff, so that our thoughts glorify Him more. Good news: He won't leave us to blindly try to accomplish a new mindset on our own - we 'can do all things through Christ' (Philippians 4:13 NKJV).
How do you start truly relying on God? Invite Him into the dark spaces of your mind, so that you start to focus on Him instead. Take a look at Romans 3:22: Jesus is your righteousness, not you. The sin-covering grace that He offers you is enough to cover any slip-ups you make, and to carry you all the way to breaking your habit.
So what now? Got a habit that affects the rhythm of your day? Chat to God about what controls you. Then, find a trustworthy Christian to help you pray about it.
