God's gentle whispers
'You will hear a voice behind you saying, "This is the...way."' Isaiah 30:21 NCV
God didn't just speak to people in Bible times; he speaks to us today - we just need to recognise his voice. Sometimes God does speak with a big sign or an audible voice, but usually not. And, while we're waiting for those 'big moments', we can miss God speaking to us in the quieter times.
God said to Elijah: 'Go out and stand on the mountain in the presence of the Lord, for the Lord is about to pass by' (1 Kings 19:11 NIV). The Bible says: 'Then a great and powerful wind tore the mountains apart and shattered the rocks before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake. After the earthquake came a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire came a gentle whisper. When Elijah heard it, he... stood at the mouth of the cave. Then a voice said to him, "What are you doing here, Elijah"' (1 Kings 19:11-13 NIV)? God was in the whisper. A gentle whisper.
And today he still 'whispers' to us: through our thoughts, family members, friends, a pastor, a change in our circumstances, a verse in the Bible we've read many times, a great book, or in the quietness where he simply fills our hearts with perfect peace. We just need to be listening for his gentle whispers.
So what now? Ask God to open your ears to his gentle whispers as you go about your day-to-day life.
