An attitude like Jesus
'You must have the same attitude that...Jesus had.' Philippians 2:5 NLT
In our life journey, the 'storms' - illness, unemployment, relationship strains and break-ups, death of loved ones - can knock us around. And, if we're not careful, the turbulence of the storms can affect our moods and lead to negative attitudes. We can view things through a negative filter, and complain and compare our situation with others' situations. But Paul writes, 'You must have the same attitude...Jesus had' (Philippians 2:5 NLT). This seems like a pretty big ask! How can we have the same attitude as Jesus? He is perfect.
Jesus had many amazing qualities, which added up to an amazing attitude. Here are just a few of those qualities. He had compassion - he fed the hungry and healed the sick. Kindness and selflessness characterised his personality (see Mark 10:45). He was submissive to his heavenly Father and his earthly parents (see Luke 2:51). He was full of mercy and forgiveness: 'Father, forgive them. They don't know what they are doing' (Luke 23:34 GWT). Jesus was honest, truthful and peacable. He was patient (see 2 Peter 3:9).
God's Word promises us: 'But we Christians... can be mirrors that brightly reflect the glory of the Lord. And as the Spirit of the Lord works within us, we become more and more like him' (2 Corinthians 3:18 TLB). Wow! God's Spirit has the supernatural power to transform our attitude.
So what now? You have God's Spirit within you, so you are being transformed to be more like Jesus. Thank Jesus that he himself is helping you to have an attitude like him.
