Secrets of selfcontrol 6
'Don't give the devil a chance.' Ephesians 4:27 GNT
Avoid the things that tempt you. It's good to stay away from situations that weaken our self-control. In the Lord's Prayer, we ask God: 'Don't allow us to be tempted (Matthew 6:13 GWT). But we have a part to play too; to take responsibility ourselves, by avoiding or limiting opportunities to be tempted.
So, what to avoid? Whenever we can, we should plan in advance to keep away from situations that we know are going to create temptation. If we tend to buy things on impulse, it means avoiding signing up for promotional emails offering us bargains that look too good to miss. It's easier to eat more healthily if we don't keep sweets and chocolate in our cupboard. If we struggle with pornography, let's do whatever we can to cut off our access to it. Bottom line: when we know we're liable to be tempted to do something that goes against God's will for us, it's so much easier to resist that temptation when it isn't right in front of us.
Sometimes it may mean avoiding people who seem to get us into situations where we're likely to be tempted. The Bible says, 'Bad company corrupts good character' (1 Corinthians 15:33 NIV). Best to not allow other people to draw us into circumstances we know we should be avoiding.
So what now? If you find yourself being tempted, pray this prayer: 'Lord, I'm not strong enough to resist this temptation on my own. Please help me. Remind me of your will, and help me fix my eyes on you.'
